REVIEWS :

SPITALFIELDS WINTER FESTIVAL, 6 DEC 2016

“He closed with some exemplary Liszt – the Three Concert Études from the 1840s – meeting their technical challenges with restrained virtuosity, and wonderfully alert to nuances of emotion and meaning….Un Sospiro was exquisite in its elegance, sensitivity and lyrical warmth. Very fine.” The Guardian

“Then came three tours de force: Judith Weir’s I’ve turned the page, dazzling in its liberated invention; Jonathan Dove’s tumultuously exhilarating Catching Fire, getting its London premiere; and Liszt’s Three Concert Etudes, delivered by Tan with consummate ease and grace.” The Independent

WIGMORE RECITAL, LONDON, 13 Oct 2016

“The way in which this great musician engages with music and communicates this to his audiences is astonishingly consistent and you could hear how he maintains seductive freshness and spontaneity as he dived into the cryptic mindset of Beethoven’s last set of Bagatelles, creating haiku-like ripples of sharp wit ~ and characterisation. “ ~ Classicalsource.com

“Liszt’s monumental Sonata in B minor was the fitting climax of the evening… Commanding both its ambiguous structure and extreme physical challenges, Tan had everything required for scaling this musical peak. “ ~ The Telegraph

ON TOUR ADELAIDE, MELBOURNE, SINGAPORE, HONG KONG 19 Oct – 1 Nov 2016

International Morgan’s Piano Series:

“The freshness and spontaneity of his playing was utterly engaging, capturing the impetuous, mercurial, free play of Beethoven’s bold and restless imagination. Uninhibited by conventions of fingering, phrasing, pedalling or anything else, Tan was truly at one with this music.” ~ The Advertiser (Adelaide)

Melbourne Festival:

“…this new score (Catching Fire by Jonathan Dove) enjoyed a riveting exposition from its dedicatee who powered through its rising temperature with mastery and obvious gusto.” ~ The Age

Singapore:

“…spellbinding ride. What a journey it was, from stentorian chords, luminescent chorales to stampeding octaves and finally silence. This performance was not about digital virtuosity, but more a lifetime’s experience encapsulated within an absorbing half-hour.” ~ The Straits Times (on Liszt B Minor Sonata)
